Hyliion is looking for a Lead Engineer – Power Electronics & HV Powernet to join our engineering team in Austin, TX. This full-time on-site position offers the opportunity to be a part of a fast-growing company. We are seeking exceptionally talented and passionate individuals to join Hyliion on a mission to produce electrified powertrain systems that can augment or fully replace traditional diesel or natural gas-fueled powertrains.
In this role, you will be responsible for the design, implementation, and testing of high voltage systems and electrical vehicle components up to 1000V, developing the subsystem of the vehicle, taking designs from the conceptual stage through final implementation, troubleshooting of test vehicles, and system optimization and refinement for production. You will be a key contributor to the technical product execution of electrical and electronic systems. This position will guide the engineers and have design and release ownership of all components within the electrical and electronics system.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Guide technical design, development, and product execution of electrification solutions for Class 8 truck applications, such as high voltage system design and defining requirements for HV fuses, buss bars, cables, calculating voltage drop, ampacity, and efficiency.
- Lead supplier development efforts to research, design, and test high-voltage electric components, equipment, and standards.
- Responsible for hitting system cost targets through module consolidation, design optimization, and production supplier selection.
- Work closely with wire harness design, development, simulation, testing, troubleshooting, and repair as it relates to electrical powertrain systems.
- Develop standards, requirements, and specifications for Hyliion.
- Contribute to VAVE strategy, roadmap and pipeline through brainstorming sessions, competitive benchmarking, and drive project selection to align with business objectives.
- Lead technical resolution for component level issues. Organize engineering problem solving activities to assess problem root cause; implement solutions to improve product reliability.
- Ensure that electrical aspects of Hyliion products meet all necessary safety and emission compliance requirements.
- Creation of timing plans for multiple programs demonstrating key milestones and deliverables.
- Interface regularly with project managers and multi-disciplinary team leads to meet project deadlines.
- Leadership and willingness to mentor teams, organized, detail oriented, work professionally with various levels of Hyliion management.
- Interpret customer requirements to develop system and sub-system product specifications.
- Develop and manage APQP documentation including FMEAs and DVP&Rs.

Qualifications include:
Education
- Bachelor’s degree in Electrical or Electronics Engineering.
- 4-7 years relevant engineering experience in automotive/passenger car/commercial vehicle industry, especially in electrical systems engineering.
Specialized knowledge/Professional Certifications (preferred)
- Masters degree in engineering preferred.
- Power systems background.
- Understanding of DC/DC converters, battery chargers, HV 3-phase motors.
- Experience leading technical projects including managing schedules and setting key project tasks/milestones.
- Experience in design of electrified powertrain systems.
Skills
- Bring expertise from automotive industry and standards (FMEAs, DVP&Rs, SAE, ISO, ANSI/ASTM, DIN, NEC).
- Understand electrical aspects of automotive powertrain systems including traditional, hybrid, and/or all-electric.
- Drive innovation and define of HV system and topology, HV requirements, safety requirements, including power distribution, fuses, contactors, X/Y capacitances, and other HV components.
- Strong knowledge of Electromagnetic Interference/Compatibility (EMI/EMC).
- Experience with ISO 26262 Functional Safety Concept (FSC) and Technical Safety Concept (TSC) discussions with relevant stakeholders.
- Experience with 300-750V (up to 1000V) systems electrical and wiring.
- Experience with HV commissioning and de-commissioning processes and documentation.
- Understand Isolation Resistance and Capacitance system design and troubleshooting.
- Experience setting up high voltage test laboratories or component test benches.
- Experience troubleshooting system-level issues using schematics and reference documents.
- Experience using electrical lab equipment such as but not limited to: Power Supplies, Oscilloscopes, Function Generators, Data capture tools, LTSpice, Circuit simulation tools, Electronic Loads, Altium etc.
- Provide engineering support to manufacturing and assembly production teams to resolve manufacturing process issues related to HV systems.
- Understand challenges of prototype, small volume, high volume manufacturing.
- Poses knowledge of Microsoft Office Suite, Zuken E3, ProE-Creo, Visio, Windchill, Smartsheet or similar.
- Ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing with teammates and cross-functional teams, external parties to address their needs promptly and to follow through on commitments.
- Ability to understand and follow complex verbal and written instructions.
- Ability to read, understand and generate electrical manufacturing documentation.
- Ability to work well in a high-paced environment, set and meet appropriate deadlines.
- Ability to select and source needed components used in wiring harnesses.
- Ability to troubleshoot and repair/build harnesses.
- Willing to travel (15% of time) visiting engineering providers and hardware suppliers.
