Hypertruck ERX

Hyliion’s first range-extended electrified powertrain on the software-defined Hypertruck™ platform, paving the way for fleet electrification in longer range Class 8 applications

Reengineering the
Electric Advantage

The easy-to-adopt technology provides unmatched benefits for fleets and operators.

The Modular and Efficient Solution to Your Power Needs
Extended Range

With the capability of providing up to 1,000-miles1 of un-refueled total range, the ERX powertrain surpasses the total range of all other next-generation powertrain technologies, enabling new Class 8 fleet applications to be electrified.

Improved Operational Experience

The confidence provided by up to 670 peak horsepower, the flexibility to operate with zero tailpipe emissions and significantly reduced noise for up to 75-miles2, and the convenience of CNG fueling and infrastructure combine to provide a next-generation fleet experience.

Fleet Performance

Vehicles equipped with the ERX powertrain can be refueled with renewable natural gas (RNG), which is not only better for the environment than diesel, but cheaper as well. With its focus on both environmental and financial benefits, including qualifying for various regulatory mandates, the ERX system delivers on the types of performance that fleets care about.

Featuring
State-of-the-Art Innovation

Revolutionizing the trucking experience, the ERX powertrain offers a robust system of software and hardware that takes the commercial transportation industry to the next level.

Hyliion Hub™
Driver selectable in intensity, Advanced eRetarder introduces an intuitive new way to control your fleet’s Class 8 trucks. By providing a one-pedal regenerative braking experience, drivers will be empowered to control their equipment more accurately, and efficiently, than ever before.
Advanced eRetarder
Using three distinct Drive Modes, the ERX system allows the driver to fully utilize its unique range extender capabilities. These modes, Automatic Drive, Manual EV, and Manual Charge, are all easily selectable through CoPilot, providing control for when the generator is on or off.
Drive Modes
The ERX system helps fleets reduce unnecessary idling, whether during breaks, delays, or overnights, through a high-voltage battery enabled HVAC system. Capable of providing both A/C and heat, as well as an AC inverter, for long periods of time, drivers will have everything they need without needing to idle the engine.
Idle Reduction
Using the latest version of Hyliion’s CoPilot HMI software, the ERX system provides the driver with all the information needed to operate and monitor the system, including for the ERX system’s three drive modes. Should an issue occur with the system, CoPilot will provide the driver with all the information needed to resolve the issue with their fleet.
Hyliion CoPilot
Hyliion Hub, Hyliion’s cloud powertrain management component of the Hypertruck platform, provides fleet managers with the data needed to manage the operations of the ERX systems out on the road. This includes feedback on operational performance, emissions, and maintenance.

ERX Powertrain Explained

Using the Hypertruck range-extended electrified platform, the ERX system is normally recharged by an onboard natural gas generator, but can also utilize DC fast-charge infrastructure, if available. Currently available on a Peterbilt 579 sleeper configuration, the ERX electrified powertrain enables fleets to put range anxiety in the rear-view mirror.
Powered by Renewable Natural Gas

Hyliion charts a new direction in range-extender technology with its innovative ERX software-defined powertrain solution. By harnessing the sustainable energy of renewable natural gas, the ERX system is pragmatically leading the charge towards a greener future in Class 8 electrification.

The ERX Infrastructure Advantage

Electrified Class 8 vehicles require extensive infrastructure investment to prove truly useful in fleet service. The ERX system works around that challenge by utilizing the existing nationwide network of compressed natural gas and renewal natural gas stations.

Frequently Asked Questions

Find answers to common questions or connect with our sales team for additional help.

How do you charge the ERX powertrain? arrow-right-icon

The ERX powertrain uses an onboard natural gas generator to automatically recharge the system while in use. However, the powertrain can also be charged via an included CCS1 plug-in charging port, capable of DC fast charging.

What kind of range should I expect from the ERX powertrain? arrow-right-icon

The ERX powertrain provides up to 1,000 miles of total range1, and when fully charged can provide up to 75 miles of range without the generator on2, providing zero tailpipe and significantly reduced noise emissions.

1. Range dependent on multiple factors including vehicle load, terrain, road conditions, battery system state of charge, fuel fill level, and driver operation.
2. Pure EV range dependent on multiple factors including vehicle load, terrain, road conditions, battery system state of charge, and driver operation.

Is the ERX a truck, or a powertrain? arrow-right-icon

The ERX system is a powertrain developed from the Hypertruck software-defined and range-extended electrified powertrain platform. It will initially be offered already installed on a 2023 Peterbilt 579 80” UltraLoft sleeper cab.

How long can the ERX system provide zero idle air conditioning, heat, and AC power? arrow-right-icon

The ERX system is expected to provide enough zero idle air conditioning, heat, and AC power for the government mandated 34-hour HOS reset. As a result, we expect the powertrain to receive certification as a SmartWay APU.3

3. APU performance dependent on multiple factors including driver operation and battery system state of charge.

What kind of emissions reductions should I expect from the ERX powertrain? arrow-right-icon

The emissions savings provided by the ERX powertrain depend on two broad factors – usage and fuel type/location. Usage factors include the driver’s performance, the load and type of trailer, and the geographic locale where the powertrain is operated. Fuel factors include whether the tanks are fueled with standard CNG or RNG, and the state where the fueling station is located.

How much torque does the ERX powertrain provide? arrow-right-icon

The ERX powertrain provides 1,650 ft-lb of torque between its two motors.
