At the heart of Hyliion’s KARNO Power Module is the truly innovative KARNO Core, which uses linear electric motors in a four-shaft system to generate electricity. Building on the principles of the 200-year-old Stirling thermodynamic cycle, the KARNO Core is the result of years of extensive research and development work in aerospace engines, metal additive manufacturing, and generator thermal and performance design.

How the KARNO Core Works

The Hyliion KARNO Core is a game-changing linear generator that turns heat into electricity using a flameless, low-temperature oxidation process. The system is designed to deliver ultra-low to zero emissions without the need for additional emission treatments. Each 200 kW linear generator features four synchronized shafts working together to drive a thermodynamic cycle that uses heat to power linear piston movements. These movements generate electricity as the shaft, featuring a magnet array, moves through static copper coils at a high frequency.

Flameless Oxidation*

The KARNO proprietary flameless oxidation system, coupled with the unique KARNO architecture, requires only heat to be supplied to the core power system, resulting in a truly fuel-agnostic design. The KARNO system is compatible with fuels that have flame characteristics as slow as ammonia and as fast as hydrogen – without any hardware modifications.

Innovative Form Factor
Each standard 200 kW KARNO Power Module features a fully enclosed system, housing a four-shaft power module, power electronics, and thermal and fuel management systems, capable of supplying reliable clean power. When coupled with an optional grid-tie inverter, the system simplifies site permitting and installation. The KARNO Power Module’s proprietary control system facilitates comprehensive system monitoring, control, and diagnostics, with the capability to control other units for full-scale load paralleling and balancing.*

The KARNO system’s modular architecture and class-leading power density delivers 2 MW of clean, continuous and reliable power in a compact 20′ ISO container footprint (~160sqft). With a robust design, low maintenance needs, and quiet operation, KARNO Power Modules are ready to generate and supply clean electricity in both urban and remote locations for any scale.
